The Lough Erne Challenge took place on The Faldo Course, Lough Erne Resort, Enniskillen on Wednesday 21st July. A Northern Ireland (-6) team featuring Lough Erne Resort touring professional Rory McIlroy and Darren Clarke defeated a Republic of Ireland (-5) team comprising of Padraig Harrington and Shane Lowry in a fourball better ball strokeplay event.
Commentary for the highlights package will be provided by Nick Faldo, course designer of The Faldo Course at Lough Erne Resort.
Northern Ireland represented by Rory McIlroy and Darren Clarke claimed the honours in the second Lough Erne Challenge at Lough Erne Resort in Co. Fermanagh, when they defeated the Republic of Ireland pair of Padraig Harrington and Shane Lowry by a single shot (66 to 67) in an 18 hole betterball strokeplay match.
Lough Erne touring professional McIlroy was the dominant figure as he picked up from where he left off in the Open Championship at St. Andrews.
Three early birdies by the world number seven helped the North to establish a three shot lead after five holes but Harrington and Lowry kept plugging away and when Harrington birdied the short 13th, the scores were tied on four under par.
McIlroy struck the decisive blow with a birdie at the par three 15th to edge the North in front again and that proved enough as the final three holes were halved.
For McIlroy, the win represented a second success in the Lough Erne Challenge after he defeated Harrington in the augural staging last year and the 21 year old was pleased to complete the double.
“It was quite nice that we got off to a good start but they played some good golf and came back at us and we were lucky to hold on at the end.”
Clarke was full of praise for the course despite the difficult conditions.
“I thought the course was brilliant. It was in sensational condition. The greens were as good as I’ve putted on all year.This golf course would make a sensational tournament venue.”
Harrington enjoyed the match despite coming out on the wrong side of the result for the second year in succession and believes the Lough Erne resort would be an ideal venue to stage a European Tour event in the future.
“I think the crowds would be phenomenal up here, you would like to see an Irish Open come here. The pros would love it and it would be a great event.”
Lowry too enjoyed his first visit to the venue.
“The course was in great shape and it’s a great place to come, I’ll certainly be coming here more often,” said Lowry.
